Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, Cheryl Powell moved to Winston Salem in 1978 and instantly loved living in the City of the Arts. She found the people there welcoming and willing to share their knowledge about art and the city’s art scene.

Her formal education began with a year at Pratt Institute studying Fashion Design, followed by a transfer to Carnegie-Mellon University where she earned a BFA in Graphic Design in 1972. Her passion has always been painting but her formal education in Graphic Design led to a full time Graphic Design Career at HanesBrands and painting was put on hold for many years.

In 1996 she enrolled in the Independent Study Degree Program at Syracuse University to earn a Master of Arts in Illustration. The program focused on creative thinking, ways to communicate ideas plus skills in painting and drawing which caused painting to come to the forefront again. Transitioning to part time freelance design left time for painting with a focus on plein air cityscapes and realistic studio work in pastels and oils.

Her current work can be best described as representational to semi-abstract in oil, acrylic and mixed media. Subject matter varies but the favorites are cityscapes and figures.
